Mentor/Parent Information
We desperately need to be transformed into the image Christ in every area of our lives. For the unsaved world, their only hope is found in the gospel. If your child or the person you are mentoring is a Christian, or is not a Christian they both need the same thing. They both need to be more like Jesus. For the lost world, Jesus is the only solution to their biggest problem (justification). And for the Christian, Jesus is the only solution to battling with their sin, and being transformed into his image (sanctification).
Each week I will be posting an overview of what is being taught that week. I believe it would be beneficial if you would sit down each week with your child or mentee and look at the scriptures being referenced. The goal is to help the child understand the scripture the way the original audience would have understood them. So, to help you understand scripture, here is a format taken from the book One to One Bible Reading, by David Helm.
Look for the following things…
“Context
Observation
Meaning
Application
This is really a summary of how we read anything. Even when we pick up a newspaper article, we notice what sort of thing we are reading and how it fits with other things around it (context); we read the words and sentences and paragraphs, taking note of the main events, people and content (observation); we integrate what we've observed in our heads and form a conclusion about what the author is trying to say (meaning); and we reflect on whether the author's message has any relevance for our lives (application).
A one-to-one Bible reading meeting using the COMA method would go like this:
When you enrolled in LifeTree Legacies, you should have received an ESV Study Bible. At the beginning of each book in the ESV Study Bible there is an introduction with the following information; Author and Title, Date and Place of Writing, Theme, Purpose, Occasion, and Background, History of Salvation Summary, and Literary Features. These tools and commentaries are meant to help us understand the text the way the original audience would have understood them.
May the Holy Spirit use scripture to transform yours and your child’s life.

A one-to-one Bible reading meeting using the COMA method would go like this:
- Read the passage aloud
- You ask some context questions of the text:
- What sort of writing is this? (A letter, a narrative, a poem?)
- Are there any clues about the circumstances under which it was written?
- What has happened so far?
- You ask some observation questions of the text:
- Are there any major sub-sections or breaks in the text?
- What is the main point or points?
- What surprises are there?
- What are the key words? What words or ideas are repeated?
- You ask some meaning questions of the text:
- How does this text relate to other parts of the book?
- How does the passage relate to Jesus?
- What does this teach us about God?
- How could we sum up the meaning of this passage in our own words?
- You ask some application questions of the text?
- How does this passage challenge (or confirm) my understanding?
- Is there some attitude I need to change?
- How does this passage call on me to change the way I live?
- You pray together about what you have learned.”
