Mentors and Parents

Mentee or Disciple?

Mentoring, what a task… What is the point of mentoring? Well as one source on the internet put it, “the aim should always be to enable the mentee to develop their own skills, strategies and capability so that they are enabled to tackle the next hurdle more effectively with or without the mentor’s presence…”

With that definition in mind, what are we trying to accomplish at LifeTree Legacies by using mentors? When I think of a mentor at LifeTree, several things come to mind, first the mentor must be willing and kind, and able to teach some certain set of skills. That being said, I believe one of the most important skills needed for the young follower of Christ is to be able to read the Bible well within its context.

How do you learn to read the Bible within its context? You could study books that show you how, or you could learn from another follower of Christ, who has studied it.

So why?

Why should you learn and then teach others to read the bible within its context? The following list was taken from One-to-One Bible Reading by David Helm.

“Reading One-to-One is a variation on that most central Christian activity – reading the Bible – but done in the context of reading with someone… this simple idea could profoundly influence the growth of the gospel – not only in your own life but in the lives of your family members and friends. More specifically, there are at least four tangible benefits to reading one-to-one…Salvation…Sanctification…Training…Relationship…  So, why read the Bible one-to-one with another person?  We do so because of our convictions about the power of God’s Word. When people are exposed to it, they find salvation in Christ, they are sanctified in faith, they are trained for effective ministry, and they find community in a web of relationships that are unlike any other the world has to offer.”

I hope you are convinced of this truth; one of the most important skills you need to develop is how to read the Bible within its context.
